Nanowires can be made of a variety of semiconductor materials such as a silicon or indium phosphide. The electronic properties of these structures can be quite different than "bulk wires" owing to the quantum confinement of electrons. Nanowires have great potential as interconnects for nanometer-scale electronic devices.
