News and Highlights

Steve Louie was elected to the National Academy of Science in 2005.  Election to the NAS recognizes distinguished and continuing achievements in original research and is one of the most prestigious honors for an American scientist.

Renata Wentzcovitch was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society. This honor is limited to no more than one-half of one percent of the membership. The citation for her election reads: "For computational tools for, and valuable predictions of, structure and properties of earth minerals and exotic oxides, especially at high pressure and temperature.

Yousef Saad was named an Institute of Technology Distinguished Professor at the University of Minnesota.  The IT Distinguished Professorship honors exceptional faculty for their efforts in and contributions to teaching and scholarly research and for their genuine commitment to IT and its activities

Jim Chelikowsky received the David Adler Lectureship Award at the 2006 March Meeting of the American Physical Society.  The citation for this award reads:  "For his creative and outstanding research in computational materials physics and for his effectiveness in communicating research results through lectures and publications." A Quicktime movie of his presentation can be found here. Jim was also named a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Science in 2008.

Marie Lopez del Puerto has received the Louise T. Dosdall Fellowship at the University of Minnesota. This fellowship recognizes women graduate students in any field of the natural or physical sciences who show exceptional promise for a successful career in research. Marie is a graduate student researcher within ITAMIT.

Leeor Kronik has received the Krill Prize for excellence in scientific research. The Krill Prizes are awarded annually, in exact sciences, life sciences, medicine, agriculture and engineering, to excelling faculty members at institutions of higher education in Israel, who hold the untenured positions of Lecturer, or Senior Lecturer. Leeor is a member of the International Advisory Board of ITAMIT.

 

 

Research

Work by Gustavo Dalpian and Jim Chelikowsky on the difficulty of doping nanostructures was highlighted in Nature and PhysOrg. Work on spintronics materials is highlighted in Chemical Engineering news. More news on our computational work can be found here.
