Quantum Dots

Quantum dots image Quantum dots are intriguing systems. They consist of bulk fragments of a microcrystal, usually passiviated with hydrogen or a polymeric material. Since the optical excitation is physically confined to the dot, the absorption spectrum of the system can be dramatically different from the bulk crystal. For example, crystals of silicon are optically inactive, but nano sized quantum dots are optically active.
